(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Women's Basketball team suffered yet another heart-breaking final second loss this afternoon as they fell 76-75 to visiting Simmons University inside the Muldoon Gymnasium on Senior Day. The Raiders are now 3-18 overall and 1-10 in the conference while the Sharks improve to 6-17 overall, 3-7 against league play.
Simmons' senior Molly Phillips (Cranston, R.I.) hit a go-ahead three pointer with 6.3 seconds remaining in regulation for the eventual game-winner. A last second three for Rivier hit the front of the rim as time expired and fell to the floor. This is the third conference loss for Rivier in the final seconds this season (vs. Anna Maria, vs. JWU).
Prior to the game, the Raiders Basketball family held a small ceremony to honor the three seniors on the roster – Kaylee Kacavas (Dracut, Mass.), Megan Hamel (Colebrook, N.H.) and Elizabeth Meehan (Nashua, N.H.).
The loss spoils an outstanding effort from the veteran Kacavas. The captain went 14-of-24 from the floor along with 12-for-16 from the line for a game-high 42 points while also dishing out seven assists. Meehan was the assist leader as she notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. Hamel pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds for her 13th double-digit rebound performance of the season.
The Sharks saw three student-athletes reach double-figures in points scored with Phillips leading the charge with 24 points. Sophomore Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) finished with 21 points and Senior Rebehak Carroll (Londonderry, N.H.) was right behind with 20 points, thanks to shooting 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Deane Douglas (Towson, Md.) collected eight rebounds to lead the team in the narrow victory.
Rivier will wrap up the 2018-19 regular season with a home game on Tuesday evening against Fisher College. Game time is scheduled for 7pm. Simmons, meanwhile, will return to conference action on Tuesday night as they travel to Regis College for an 8pm tip-off.
