Rivier 3 Thomas 1
The Raiders (6-1; 0-0) finish their 7-game Spring Training trip
with another win. Riv got things going in fine fashion as leadoff
batter, freshman Katie Bachinski (Northfield, MA),
smashed a 1-2 offering over the left-centerfield fence. Another
long ball by freshman Marissa Mercier (N.
Smithfield, RI) brought home 2 RBI as freshman Taylor
Cournoyer (Mansfield, MA) led off the top of the fourth
inning with a double. These were the only runs the Blue and Gray
could plate but that was more than enough for senior Monica
White (Augusta, ME). In yet another dominating
performance, White hurled a no-hitter and K'd a season-best 16
batters. The only Thomas run scored in the second inning after
White issued a lead-off walk. The runner advanced all the way to
third base on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a passed ball.
Several Raiders came up big during the first week of the 2010
season. The four top hitters for Riv are freshmen with
Katie Bachinski (Northfield, MA) leading the way.
She is hitting .458 with 2 HR's and 6 RBI. She also leads the team
in slugging percentage (.833) and stolen bases (7). Taylor
Cournoyer (Mansfield, MA) and Mandy
Thornton (Hanover, MA) are both hitting at a .444 clip.
Taylor leads the team in hits (12), doubles (4) and RBI (7).
Marissa Mercier (N. Smithfield, RI) is hitting
.391 with 2 dingers while doing an outstanding job behind the
plate. Junior Amanda Ryan (W. Bridgewater, MA) is
hitting a solid .357 while senior Monica White
(Augusta, ME) is a perfect 3 for 3 in stolen bases while hitting
.318. On the mound is where White is doing most of her damage. In
37.1 innings pitched, Monica has given up only 3 earned runs on 14
hits while striking out an amazing 72 batters.
The Raiders return to New Hampshire on Friday evening. Riv opens
up their conference schedule on Saturday, March 20th at home versus
Simmons College.
