(Nashua, NH) The Rivier College Raider Softball team received a tremendous offensive performance from sophomore Catherine Roy (Dracut, MA) as they outscored the Mount Ida Mustangs, 29-15 in two victories up at Raider Diamond.
Game One
Trailing by seven runs in the fifth inning, the Raider mounted an incredible come back to steal a 12-9 win from Mount Ida. Rivier (7-3 overall, 1-2 GNAC) crossed the plate 9 times in the bottom half of the inning.
Roy started the scoring attack with a 2 run Home Run to left that plated sophomore Samantha Gagnon (Rollinsford, NH). After junior Marissa Mercier (North Smithfield, RI) doubled, classmate Amanda Thornton (Hanover, MA) doubled her home to trim the deficit to just four. The Raiders received RBI plate appearances from senior Karen Waterman (Rutland, VT), sophomore Hillary Tarr (North Easton, MA), Gagnon and sophomore Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI).
Junior Nadjeska Reynolds (Hamden, CT) came in relief and earned the win. She tossed 7 innings holding Mount Ida to just 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 8.
For the Mustangs (5-8 overall, 1-2 GNAC), junior Devan Meeker (Bantam, CT) took the loss on the mound after pitching 5 innings. Classmate Denis Picard (Winooski, VT) threw the last inning and allowed a run on two hits. At the plate, freshman third baseman Gina Onorevole (Lafayette, NJ) went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI while sophomore Kirsten Guerrero (Fairfield, CT) was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles.
For the Raiders, Gagnon finished game one going a perfect 3-for-3 with a RBI. Both Mercier and Thornton were 3-for-4 with a RBI. Mercier did add her third HR of 2012 in the game. Peacock, Waterman and freshman Samantha Verney (Goffstown, NH) all added two hits, respectively.
Game Two
Rivier continued to swing the bats in Game Two as they used a 9 run first on their way to a 17-6 win.
Roy was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game with 6 RBI while Verney was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI. Peacock had a solid 2-for-4 effort with 3 runs scored and Waterman collected 3 hits and 3 RBI. Both Thornton and Gagnon recorded two hits in the second game for the Raiders who improved to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the GNAC.
Mount Ida (5-9 overall, 1-3 GNAC) received a 2-for-3 game out of junior second baseman Tiffany Hamann (Newton, MA), who also knocked in run. Guerrero and junior Meghan Moriarty (Holbrook, MA) added two RBI each in the loss.
Tarr was the winner for Rivier as she improved to 2-1 on the season with a complete game effort. She allowed 6 runs on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts over her 5 innings. Freshman Rayelle Pierson (Pittsfield, MA) was the losing pitcher for Mount Ida.
Roy finished the day going an impressive 5-for-7 with 9 RBI and a HR. Gagnon went a perfect 5-for-5 for the Raiders.
Rivier will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon as they host Emmanuel College in a GNAC double-header, beginning at 1pm. Mount Ida will travel to Emerson College for their GNAC double-header tomorrow afternoon.
