Softball spilts on Senior Day with Simmons

(Nashua, NH) The Rivier College Raiders (25-11, 17-9 GNAC) split the afternoon contest against the visiting Simmons College Sharks (23-14, GNAC 19-7) in the final regular season game on senior day. The Raiders took the first game from the Sharks 13-5 while dropping the second game in a close one 7-6.

The Raider's offence exploded in the first game right out of the gates with the best performance coming from sophomore Hillary Tarr (North Easton, MA) who went 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. On the mound the Raiders were once again led by junior Nadjeska Reynolds (Hamden, CT) who threw 4 solid innings and held the Sharks to only 5 runs.

For the Sharks their offensive leader was their first basemen sophomore Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, MA) who went 2 for 2 with a double and a home run with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Sophomore Katie McCarthy (Falmouth, ME) also had a strong game behind the plate and with the bat going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored.

The second game the Raiders got off to a slow start that the Sharks took full advantage of and never let go even with a dramatic late game rally that ended the game with Reynolds being gunned out at home. With it being senior day it was only fitting that senior Karen Waterman (Rutland, VT) lead the Raiders offence with 2 hits in the second game a double, and a long home run over the right field fence. Junior Amanda Thornton (Hanover, MA) also had a big day at the dish going 3 for 4 in the second game with a home run and 2 RBI.

Once again the offence was led by Cunningham who hit her second home run of the game and finished 3 for 4 with and 5 RBI. And leading the Sharks on the mound was a strong pitching performance behind freshman Amanda Cordeiro (Fall River, MA) who tossed a complete game while only allowing 6 runs from the Raiders.

With the Raiders playing on Senior Day they honored their captain in between games this afternoon with an on-field ceremony. Waterman is the lone senior and captain for the Raiders this season. Daughter of Claire and Mark Waterman, Karen has excelled as a second baseman in her 4 years at Rivier. While playing in over 115 games for the Raiders she has compiled 3 home runs, 56 RBI, and is a .300 lifetime hitter. Karen will leave Rivier College with a degree in Psychology and will be going to Smith College as a graduate assistant.
