(Nashua, NH) In Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action the Cadets of Norwich University took both games from the Rivier University softball team by scores of 6-1 and 9-1. Both games were played in Nashua, New Hampshire on Raider Diamond. With the losses the Raiders overall record falls to 13-15 and an even 9-9 in conference play. The Cadets overall record improves to 21-6 and 16-2 in the GNAC.
Game One: Norwich University 6, Rivier University 1
The Raiders received a complete game, four strikeout performance by starter junior Hillary Tarr (North Easton, MA). The Rivier offense was first to strike in the bottom of the first inning after junior center fielder Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI) singled and then stole both second and third base. She was driven in off the bat of junior Kirstie Clark (Brentwood, NH). Unfortunately this would be the lone Raider run in the game. The other Raider hit was a single by freshman Danielle Worthington (Uxbridge, MA) in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Cadets used two runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and one in the sixth inning to earn the victory in game one. Corinne Baita was on the hill for Norwich and she tossed a complete game and struck out seven for the victors. Setting the pace for Norwich's offense was Kelly Travers with a two run single and Melissa Rome with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate in which she score two runs and drove in two.
Game Two: Norwich University 9, Rivier University 1 (6 Innings)
The Raiders were first to strike again in game two but a nine run sixth inning propelled Norwich to a sweep in the GNAC twinbill. Freshman Taylor Miller (Haverhill, MA) started for the Raiders and was effective until the Norwich offense exploded for nine runs in the top of the sixth. Peacock was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of base hits and a couple of stolen bases. Clark led off the home half of the fourth with a double and was later driven in by a single off the bat of Worthington.
Kaylie Miller was on the rubber for the Cadets and kept Norwich close in the contest until her team supplied the offense to earn the win. Norwich was led by a collective team effort in which four batters collected multiple hits and five batters drove in at least one run.
The Raiders will return to the diamond on April 19th when they will face conference opponents Emerson College in an afternoon double-header. The Cadets will play next on April 17th when they will face Simmons College in a GNAC twinbill.
