(Nashua, NH) After a brilliant pitching performance and victory by junior Hillary Tarr (North Easton, MA) in game one, the Raiders' defense spoiled a complete game effort by freshman Taylor Miller (Haverhill, MA) to notch the loss in game two. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contests were played on Raider Diamond on Monday evening.
Game One: Rivier University 4, Simmons College 3
In a complete game, two strikeout performance by Hillary Tarr the Raiders walked off in the bottom of the seventh inning after Tarr drove in classmate Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI). Peacock was 2-for-3 in the game while scoring two of the four Raider runs. Senior Marissa Mercier (North Smithfield, RI) and freshman Kathryn Mostone (Pelham, NH) each had two hits in contest. Mostone and classmate Danielle Worthington (Uxbridge, MA) each had an RBI in the Raider victory.
For the visiting Sharks, Lauren Backhaus struck out seven in 6.1 innings of work while going 2-for-4 at the plate and adding a run to her cause. Emily Cunningham, Victoria Luongo, and Cailin Pagel each drove in a run for Simmons in the loss.
Game Two: Simmons College 7, Rivier University 0
In a pitcher's duel in game two, the Simmons Sharks came out on top after a seven run top of the seventh plagued by defensive mistakes and mental miscues by the Raider defense. The Raiders were only able to muster three hits for Taylor Miller who struck out five and walked only one batter. Miller had a three hitter going into the seventh but her defense was unable to close it out when it counted. Peacock, Mostone, and Worthington had all the hits for RIvier in the game.
The Raider bats were silenced by a three hit, seven strike out complete game tossed by Jen Field. Field aided her cause by scoring and driving in a run in the top of the seventh. Seven Sharks scored runs in the game and lead-off hitter Hannah Cunningham drove in two for the victors.
With the split Rivier's overall record stands at 10-13 and 7-7 in GNAC play. The Raiders return to the field tomorrow when they will face Newbury College under the lights on Raider Diamond. Simmons is now 16-7 overall with a 9-4 record in conference play. The Sharks return to action on April 10 when they will travel to Newton, MA to face Lasell College.
