(Nashua, New Hampshire) The Rivier University Softball team's bats continue to stay red hot as they belted out 40 hits in two wins over visiting Wheelock College in a non-confernce double header on Tuesday evening. The two wins even out Rivier's overall record to 6-6 while Wheelock drops to 0-2.
Game One: Rivier Unviersity 23, Wheelock College 0 (Final/5 innings)
Sophomore Libby Sammon (Rockport, Mass.) tossed five scorless frames allowing just one hit and striking out six as the Raiders cruised to a 23-0 win in game one of the day's twinbill.
The top of the order set the tone as both senior Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI) and freshman Shaylyn Freitas (Pelham, NH) each went 5-for-5. Peacock scored a team high five runs and knocked home three while Freitas had 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. Freshman Destiny Jordan (Lawrence, Mass.) had a solid game one as she went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI.
The blast of the day belonged to Rivier sophomore Kathryn Mostone (Pelham, NH) who's two run Home Run cleared the netting in left center. It was her first career home run.
Marissa Stolting had the lone hit for Wheelock and Margret Doyle suffered the loss in the circle after allowing 16 runs (11 earned) in just two innings of work.
Game Two: Rivier University 16, Wheelock College 2 (Final/5 innings)
The Raiders exploded for eight runs in the third inning as they took the night cap by a final score of 16-2. Senior Kirstie Clark (Brentwood, NH) pitched a complete game as she allowed just two unearned runs over five innings and setting down 10 Wildcats by way of the K.
Clark was just as good at the plate as she went 2-for-4 and Freitas added another 4 RBI to her 2-for-2 night in the win. Sophomore Allyson Nolan (Wilmington, Conn.) saw herself go 2-for-3 with a RBI and freshman Nicole Scotti (Concord, NH) added a 2-for-3 performance. Freshmen Danielle Willett (Bourne, Mass.) and Nichole Seavey (Keene, NH) also recorded hits for Rivier. Jordan belted an inside the park home run for her first career home run.
Wheelock's Vanessa Valenti had the only two hits as she went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Doyle scored the only other run for the Wildcats. Kiersten Cosgrove pitched well for the visitors but suffered the loss in just four innings of work.
Next up for the Raiders will be Lasell College on Friday night in the 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener. Wheelock will host Regis College in a NECC matchup on Saturday afternoon.
