(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Softball team earned an important Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory this afternoon as they salvaged a split with Lasell College. The Raiders fell in the opener 4-2 but bounced right back and took game two 6-1. Rivier is now 9-14 and 2-11 in the GNAC while Lasell moves to 6-17 (3-8 GNAC).
Game One: Lasell College 4, Rivier University 2 (Final)
This was a very low scoring affair for both sides. Although Rivier came up on the wrong end of the game, one player played extremely well for the Raiders. Shaylyn Freitas (Pelham, N.H.) stepped up big for the Raiders in this one. Providing some much needed offense for Rivier, Freitas was able to not only come up with a big double, but she was also able to hit an impressive solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Rivier was able to score its second run in the bottom of the 7th inning. After Nicole Scotti (Concord, N.H.) was able to advance on a walk, Destiny Jordan (Lawrence, Mass.) next was able to steal third and, off of a throwing error by the Lasers, was able to eventually steal her way home and score the run. Emily Knoops (Tewksbury, Mass.) was also able to record a big double in the game, but it was not enough as the Raiders fell 4-2.
Game Two: Rivier University 6, Lasell College 1 (Final)
Rivier brought some heavy bats with them into the second matchup of the day. Six Raiders were able to record a hit, while four were able to record at least one RBI. Jessica Cote (Nashua, N.H.) and Jordan were each able to blast two big doubles. Lia Bobek (Hollis, N.H.) was able to drive home two RBI's on a huge triple in the bottom of the sixth.
Libby Sammon (Rockland, Mass.) was on the mound for the Raiders and earned her third win of the season as she was able to record a strikeout and only allowed 3 hits on the day.
The Raiders will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they play host to Norwich University in a double header at 12:00pm and 2:00pm. As for the Lasers, they will next play tomorrow afternoon in a double header with Anna Maria College at 12:00 and 2:00pm.
