(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier Women's Softball team defeated the visiting Pine Manor College Gators twice this afternoon by scores of 20-0 and 13-0 at Raider Field. With the wins, the Raiders improve their season record to 7-11. As for the Gators, the losses send their season record to 0-4.
The Raiders, who played with heavy bats in this one, drove home an impressive 20 runs to finish off the Gators in just 5 innings. Rivier received contributions from virtually every batter, as they took the game to the Gators and never backed down. Rivier began the game with an impressive opening inning. Driving home 3 runs in the first, the Raiders looked as if they would bring a lot of offense to this one.
The second inning was just as productive for the Raiders as the first. Rivier continued their excellent offensive attack by driving home an additional 5 runs in the inning. Just when you thought the Raiders would begin to slow down, they continued to push the pace and ultimately ended up driving home 6 runs in the 3rd inning, and an additional 6 runs in the 4th inning. By this point, the Gators found themselves down 20-0 with virtually no time left to respond. After a scoreless inning by both the Raiders and Gators in the 5th inning, the game was called and the Raiders sealed themselves the victory.
There were 8 Raiders in this game who were able to record at least 1 RBI. In fact, Rivier had good performances turned in by many players in this one. Tori Dugan (Norwalk, Conn.) finished with 2 scored runs, 1 hit, and 1 RBI for the Raiders on 3 at bats. Mackenzie Sowerbutts (Lunenburg, Mass.) was able to score 3 runs, record 2 hits, and 1 RBI on 3 at bats. Nicole Scotti (Concord, N.H.), Kelli Jerome (Leicester, V.T.), Mary Kate Sweeny (Chicopee, Mass.), and Lia Bobek (Hollis, N.H.) were each able to record at least two runs for the Raiders. The star for Rivier in this one was Kathryn Mostone (Pelham, N.H.) who, on three at bats, was able to record 2 runs scored, 2 hits, and an impressive 5 RBI's.
Ari DeJesus (Providence, R.I.) played well for the Gators in this one. Although her team was ultimately shut out by the Raiders, DeJesus was able to pick up the only two hits for the Gators.
Game Two: Rivier Unviersity 13, Pine Manor College 0 (Final)
The Rivier Softball team defeated the Pine Manor College Gators in game two of their double-header at Raider field by the score of 13-0. With the win, the Raiders finished the day with two big wins outscoring the Gators by a total of 33-0.
The Raiders continued their hot play by driving in an impressive 13 runs in this one. Much like the first matchup of the day, there were as many as 9 Raiders who were able to record at least one hit. The Raiders were simply too much for the Gators in this one. Using a 4 run 1st inning, a 5 runs second inning, and a 4 run 4th inning, the Raiders were able to cruise their way to victory.
Tori Dugan (Norwalk, Conn.) and Mackenzie Sowerbutts (Lunenburg, Mass.) were each able to score two runs for the Raiders. Sam Verney (Goffstown, N.H.) was the heavy bat for the Raiders in this one. Not only was Verney able to record an impressive triple, but she was also able to record 3 hits, 4 RBI's, and score 2 runs on 3 at bats. Ultimately, the Raiders were simply the better team. This was evident on the scoreboard in both matchups.
For their next contest, the Rivier Women's Softball team will play a double-header against Albertus Magnus College on April 4th at 3:00pm and at 5:00pm. As for the Gators, they will next play Wheelock College on April 8th at Rivier University at 3:00pm and 5:00pm.
