Softball Takes Two At Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. – The Rivier softball team concluded its non-conference play for the 2025 campaign with a sweep of Wentworth on Wednesday evening at Carr Diamond.

With the results, the Raiders improved to 12-12, while the Leopards fell to 11-15. 

Rivier returns to the diamond Saturday, April 19 for Diabetes Awareness Day and a non-divisional Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) First pitch is scheduled for noon.

Rivier 6, Wentworth 3

Both squads began the contest pitching two scoreless innings. The Raiders bats came to life in the top of the third inning, putting up four runs in the frame. A lead-off walk drawn by junior Kylee Caetano, followed by junior Hayley Rapaglia reaching on a fielder's choice, put runners on first and second. Junior Olivia Couto loaded up the bases with a knock to left field followed the game's first run crossing the plate off an RBI single from junior Avry Nelson. Sophomore Sophia Quinlan extended Rivier's lead to 3-0 with a two RBI single through the left side of the infield. Graduate student Kayla Miles concluded the rally with an RBI single to left field, giving the Raiders a 4-0 lead.

Wentworth responded in the bottom half of the frame. Three Leopards crossed the plate, cutting Rivier's lead to 4-3.

The Raiders added two more runs to their total in the top of the fourth inning. Graduate student Hannah Muchemore reached on a fielder's choice brought home sophomore Hayleigh Silva and Caetano crossed the plate due to a throwing error, giving Rivier a 6-3 lead.

Sophomore pitcher Hailey Berube entered the game in relief in the bottom of the fourth inning and went on to pitch three scoreless innings, claiming the 6-3 victory for the Raiders.

Rapaglia added three innings in the circle, striking out two Wentworth batters, in addition to her one scored run. Quinlan led the offensive charge going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Silva and senior Sarah Frazier also contributed two hits in the contest, with Silva adding a run scored as well. Caetano finished game one with a team high two runs scored.

Rivier 5, Wentworth 3

Hayleigh Silva began game two reaching base via a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a swiped bag. With two outs in the inning, Olivia Couto hit an RBI comebacker to the pitcher to bring home Silva and take a 1-0.

Wentworth jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Leopards' first run crossed the plate on an RBI double to right field, knotting the game up, 1-1. Wentworth then scored two more on a fielder's choice and RBI groundout to second base to extend their advantage.

Rivier countered with a four-run top of the third inning. Sarah Frazier began the frame with a single to left field. Kylee Caetano followed up with a double to center, advancing both runners into scoring position. An RBI single to second from Hayley Rapaglia cut the Wentworth lead to one run. Couto contributed a double to left center to once again give Rivier the lead. A sacrifice fly from senior Courtney Marioles, allowed Couto to score and give the Raiders a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, a single to second off the bat of Frazier marked her 100th career hit. 

Marioles held the Leopards at bay, pitching four scoreless innings and allowing just three hits during that time span. Couto led the offensive efforts in game two, going 3-for-4, with three RBI. Caetano, Frazier, and Rapaglia each added two hits to the book.
