WEST HARTFORD, Conn.- Saint Joseph College sophomore forward
Paige Briglia (Watertown, Conn.) scored her eighth and ninth goals
of the season as the Blue Jays shut-out visiting Rivier College,
4-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on campus
in West Hartford. With the win, the Blue Jays earned their
eighth shut-out of the season and improved to 7-3-1 on the year
(4-1-1, GNAC) while the loss drops the Raiders to 2-7 overall and
1-5 in league play.
Just 4:30 into the contest Saint Joseph College senior
midfielder Laura Conover (Manchester, Conn.) notched her first goal
of the season when junior defender Susie McKenna (Southbury, Conn.)
found her teammate waiting in the box off a direct kick to make it
a 1-0 contest. The Raiders struggled to get any offensive flow
going as the stingy Blue Jay defense kept the ball out of their
half of the field. With just under 13 minutes to play in the
half, Briglia rocketed the ball off the cross bar and into the net
off a feed from first-year defender Melissa Maddaloni (Cheshire,
Conn.) to make it a 2-0 affair at the intermission.
The Blue Jays out-shot the visitors 16-3 in the first half with a
shot-on-goal advantage of 9-2 in favor of SJC. The Raiders
were able to send two shots towards the net in the opening frame
but SJC junior keeper Cait Witham (Prospect, Conn.) was up to the
task each time.
In the second half, the Blue Jays kept the momentum going as
Briglia put the game out of reach in the 64th minute with a long
shot over the head of Raiders net minder Brittany Puleo
(Hudson, N.H.). Blue Jays first-year midfielder Abby
Montambault (Watertown, Conn.) capped the scoring with her first
finish of the year following several rebounds from a corner kick
for the 4-0 final.
Witham made two saves in net for her eighth shut-out of the year
while Puleo turned away nine shots in defeat.
