#10 Rivier College (3-1 overall; 0-0 NECVA) kicked off the 2009
season with a near dominating four match weekend at the Wisconsin
Classic. Over the two day event, Rivier swept both #12 Baruch
College and Milwaukee School of Engineering 3-0 while also
defeating #15 Medaille College 3-1. The Raiders lone setback
came at the hands of Carthage College, then ranked 6th in the
nation, who defeated Rivier in a tight 5 set match. Junior
Zach Hansen (Shelton, CT) led the Raiders with a
great effort on both sides of the court. The 6'1 setter
directed the Raiders offense to a .297 hitting percentage while
dishing out 194 assists and also led the defense with a team high
37 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Jared Andreozzi
(Barrington, RI) led all Raiders with 63 kills and a 4.20
kill/game average while junior middle hitter Matt Ferreira
(Lincoln, RI) was impressive out of the middle with a team
high .481 hitting percentage and 1.33 blocks/game average.
Sophomore outside hitter Austin Soucy (Tolland,
CT) returned to the hard court with a 45 kill and 3.00
kill/game performance while senior middle hitter Scott
Wright (Salem, NH) chipped in with 33 kills and 13
blocks. Junior libero Kyle O'Neill (Long Beach,
NY) tallied a team high 2.38 digs/game while first year
player Drew Corwin (Sudbury, MA) laced in a team
high 12 service aces. First year players Chris
Convertito and Alex Xenidis played well
off the bench for the Raiders.
