Nashua, NH - It is the match that simply means nothing more than
claiming bragging rights for the next calendar year. It is the big
red of Daniel Webster Vs the Rivier Blue . It is an annual game
that marks the turning of the seasons. It is the Hatfield Vs the
McCoy's, the Republicans Vs the Democrats, Michigan Vs Ohio or dare
we say it, Red Sox Vs Yankees. It means nothing to most but
everything to some 35 or so people on the field, it is the game
that can make or break a season.
On this night, Rivier Women Soccer and Daniel Webster Women
soccer would renew their intense rivalry. It is a game that the
last two years has been decided by 1-0 scores each time, with
Rivier College winning both. This late September evening Rivier
College took the field wanting to put an exclamation point on this
game and leave no doubt. And that is exactly what they did.
From the moment the whistle blew, Rivier College was all over
the ladies from Daniel Webster, however, as usual, Rivier had a
tough time finding the back of the net. Out shooting Daniel
Webster College 21 to 3 in the first half, it was not until the
25th minute of the first half that finally Rivier would
break through, on a cross from Freshmen Jill Pilotte
(Londonderry, NH) to Sam Provencher (Merrimack,
NH) for the goal. Freshmen Amy DeSimone
(Methuen, MA) would score 10 minutes later on a cross
from Provencher, it would be Amy's 5th of the year for
Rivier and the Raiders held a 2-0 advantage. Jill Pilotte would
finish the scoring for the half when she was able to head the ball
into the back of the onion sack on a beautiful cross from Junior
Nina Seher (Nashua, NH). It was now 3-0 and the
Raiders were hungry for more.
The Raiders would out shoot the Eagles of Daniel Webster, 14-1
in the second half and continue to press hard in their high
pressure style of play. Sam Provencher would get her second goal of
the game 11 minutes into the second half on a cross from Jill
Pilotte as the two freshmen just really dominated the outside
flanks creating opportunities for everyone with nice services into
the 18. Finally the old Captain herself decided to join the party,
winning a ball just outside of the 18, Sabrina Carvalho
(Tyngsboro, MA), finished the scoring for the night with a
well placed shot over the goal keeper for her first goal of the
season and the 5-0 score that would be the final overall outcome.
Bragging rights were secure for another 365 days.
Daniel Webster with the loss falls to 3-3 overall and plays
again Saturday Oct 3rd at Elms College.
Rivier College moves to 3-4 overall with victory and breaks a 3
game losing streak. The Raiders return to action Wednesday, Sept
30th against conference rival Simmons College at
7pm in Nashua.
