Nashua, NH – Norwich University gave themselves plenty of
opportunities, rattling off 23 total shots, as they defeated the
Rivier College Raiders 2-0 tonight in Nashua, NH to improve their
record to 8-5 on the season and 6-3 in GNAC play. Rivier's goal
keeper Christine Surber (Langdon, NH) kept the
Raiders in the game as she recorded 10 saves on the night, but
couldn't help the offense as they were held scoreless to fall to
7-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the GNAC.
The first half was played well, with neither team getting real
clean looks at the goal. Surber made four saves in the half, but
none of the shots had any real threat of reaching the back of the
net. The half ended with a 0-0 tie and both teams were left to try
to make adjustments for the second half.
At the 53:00 mark, the Cadets got the break they needed to get
themselves on the scoreboard as an inadvertent hand ball inside of
the goal box gave the Cadets a penalty shot. Brittany Casey
(Pointe-Claire, Que.) took the shot and put the ball in the lower
right corner for the 1-0 lead and the eventual game winner. On the
very next possession for the Cadets Casey struck again, breaking
into the goal box behind the defense and beating Surber to the
upper right corner to give Norwich a little cushion. Norwich had a
few more opportunities in the second half, with Surber making 6
saves and two Cadets shots rattling off the crossbar, but they
couldn't find the back of the net and the game ended with the 2-0
victory.
The Raiders were outshot 23-6 on the night and 12-2 in shots on
goal. Surber ended the night with 10 saves and 2 goals allowed
while her counterpart, Norwich's Nicki Hunsicker (Emmaus, PA)
recorded 2 saves in the win.
The Raiders will travel to Simmons College for a 1:00 pm GNAC
match-up on Saturday, October 16th, meanwhile the Cadets will play
next at home on Thursday, October 14th in a non-conference game
against Lyndon State at 3:30 pm.
