Nashua, NH - A very physical game was played out tonight at
Rivier College as the Raiders needed a win to stay alive in the
Great Northeast Athletic Conference playoff hunt. A tough 1-0
loss to GNAC foe Emerson College dashed their hopes as the Raiders
fell to 3-6-2 in conference play and too far back in the standings
to make the playoffs.
The first half of play gave little chance for either team to
have any good looks at the goal. Although Emerson led in
shots 10-2 in the half, only 3 were on goal, and all saved by
Raiders goal keeper Christine Surber (Langdon,
NH).
The break for the Lions came in the 56th minute of play on a
corner kick. The corner came in from the left side and was
met by Rivier's Kristi Davis (Byfield, MA), who
headed the ball away from the goal, but the ball landed at the foot
of Emerson captain Lisa Viccione (Meridan, CT) who made one
move left and kicked the ball to the high center of the net.
The ball passed through the outreached hands of Surber and found
the back of the net to give the Lions the 1-0 lead and the eventual
victory.
Emerson keeps their playoff hopes alive as they improve to 5-6
in GNAC play with one game left to play. The Lions will take
on Mount Ida College this Saturday to determine if they will
continue their season. Meanwhile, the Raider will finish
their season against that same Mount Ida squad on Monday, October
25th in a 3:30 pm game.
