Nashua, NH - You couldn't have written a better script on senior
day for the Rivier College men's soccer program. A 3-2
overtime win against conference foe Mount Ida College for what
was the final home game in the careers of 5 seniors. Of
course, to top it off, all 5 seniors had a hand in winning the game
for the Raiders.
The Contest was no sleeper, as both teams battled until the very
end. Mount Ida started the scoring in the 34th minute of play
when Dave Miller (Randolph, MA) drilled home a shot to put the
Mustangs up 1-0. Senior Chris
Nugent* (Camberley, UK) answered for the Raiders
10 minutes later as he scored an unassisted goal to knot the game
at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The second half scoring once again saw the visiting Mustangs
pull ahead when Steve MacDonald (Medford, MA) put one in the back
of the net in the 49th minute. Again, the Raiders would fight
and claw their way to a tie as senior Andrew
McCarn (Laconia, NH) took a pass from fellow senior
Brian
Joaquim (Mont Vernon, NH) to make the score 2-2 and
eventually send the game to overtime.
The overtime period lasted just over 5 minutes, with both teams
getting shots on goal, but it was Rivier senior Sean
Auclair (Ludlow, MA) who was able to get the ball past
a diving Mustang goal keeper for the win.
Rivier's senior goal keeper John Jarvis
(Henniker, NH) picked up the win for the Raiders, giving up 2 goals
and recording 8 saves while Mount Ida's keeper, Steve Enright
(Merrimack, MA), took the loss, making 7 saves and giving up 3
goal.
Both teams had an identical 10 shots on goal, with the Mustangs
edging the total shot count 22-18. The Raiders improve to
3-14 overall and 1-8 in GNAC play while the Mustangs fall to 1-14-1
overall and 1-7-1 in the GNAC.
The Raiders will travel to Fitchburg State on Thursday, October
28th for their final game of the 2010 season.
