Providence, R.I. - Sophomore Lamonte Thomas (Providence, R.I.)
scored a game-high 25 points and added seven assists and three
rebounds to lead the Johnson & Wales University men's
basketball team to a 90-60 win against Rivier in a Great Northeast
Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on
Thursday evening.
Sophomore Calvin Jones (Providence, R.I.) added ten points and a
game-high eight rebounds for the Wildcats. Fellow sophomore
James Folk (Salem, N.H.) was also in double figures with 15 points
and five boards while junior Justin Adams (Providence, R.I.) was
also in double figures with 13 points, three rebounds and three
assists off the bench in the win.
Junior Don Poitras (Bow, N.H.) tallied 14
points and a team-best seven boards for Rivier while junior
Nick Bean (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added 14 points
in the setback for the Raiders.
Johnson & Wales controlled the action early and jumped to
their first double digit lead when a layup by Thomas put the squad
up 22-12. The Wildcats went up 48-23 on a pair of free throws
by Adams with 4:36 left in the half. JWU held the 54-29 lead
heading into the locker room at halftime after shooting an
impressive 55.3% from the field in the first half and forced nine
Rivier turnovers.
JWU extended their lead with a 21-10 run to open the second
half, capped by a pair of free throws by freshman Matt Williams
(Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) to take their largest lead of the game, 75-39
with 9:22 remaining. The Wildcats then cruised to the 90-60
victory.
With the victory Johnson & Wales is now 9-11 for the year,
6-6 in the GNAC while Rivier falls to 5-15, 2-11 in league
play.
