Raiders Bomb Away

Rivier 2 Medaille 1
Rivier 14 Medaille 6

The Raiders (5-1; 0-0) continued their dominance with another double-header sweep of a very talented Medaille squad. Game 1 was a classic pitcher's duel that came down to the final out. Riv jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on the first inning. Senior Monica White (Augusta, ME) walked, stole second and was delivered home by a clutch 2-out RBI double by freshman Mandy Thornton (Hanover, MA). White got the start on the mound and sent the Mavericks down in order in each of the first 6 frames. Freshman Katie Bachinski (Northfield, MA) sent her first career round-tripper sailing over the left field fence in the 5th inning. This proved to be the game-winner as White allowed back to back to back singles in the 7th inning to make it a 1-run game. With runners at first and second with 1 out, White struck out the next two batters to end the threat. A trio of freshmen led the way offensively as Mandy Thornton, Katie Bachinski and Marissa Mercier (N. Smithfield, RI) each tallied 2 hits. Monica White improves to 3-0 on the young season as she allowed just 3 hits to go with 12 strike outs.

Riv's bats exploded in Game 2 as they smashed 16 hits and scored 14 runs (both season-highs). The visitors got things rolling immediately as freshman Katie Bachinski led off the game with a double. An RBI double by freshman Taylor Cournoyer (Mansfield, MA) and a sacrifice fly by senior Jess Mellen (Rockland, MA) gave the Blue and Gray an early 3-0 lead. This lead quickly evaporated as the Mavericks responded wth a 2-out, 2-RBI homerun in the home half of the first. Tit for tat as senior Monica White slammed a 2-run homer of her own in the very next inning to give the Raiders some momentum. Senior Alexa Feener (Franklin, NH) gave up 2 more runs on a 2-out double before giving way to White who closed the door on the second inning with a K. White allowed an earned run in the fourth but continued to keep Medaille off balance with a combination of speed and movement. Offensively, the Raiders had several key contributors. Freshman Mandy Thornton led the way with a 4-hit, 3-RBI performance. Freshman Taylor Cournoyer added 3 hits to go with 3 RBI. Freshman Marissa Mercier and junior Amanda Ryan (W. Bridgewater, MA) chipped in with 3 hits apiece. White helped her own cause with a pair of hits and 3 runs batted in.

The Raiders play their last game of Spring Break tomorrow as Riv takes on Thomas College. First pitch is scheduled for 8:30am.
