Nashua – Junior Bruce Brown (Lowell, Mass.) delivered a
single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to score
pinch runner Josh Chasse (Haverhill, Mass.) from third and give the
Daniel Webster College baseball team a 10-9 victory over
upset-minded Rivier College and complete a sweep of the Raiders in
a doubleheader matchup of Gate City rivals Thursday night at
historic Holman Stadium.
The wild affair was a stark contrast to the Eagles game winning
opener, a 1-0 eight-inning victory that saw a solid pitcher's duel
that was decided on an errant throw.
In the nightcap, Brown's game winner helped the Eagles (12-9)
hold off a Raiders (3-19) club that had climbed back from a 9-3
deficit after five innings after Rivier (3-19) rallied with four
runs in the top of the sixth and Gilberto Luis (Miami,
Fla.) tied it with a two-run homer in the top of the
seventh to threaten extra innings.
But in the bottom of the frame, Aaron Richards (W. Warwick,
R.I.) singled to lead off and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
After back to back ground outs moved Chasse to third, Darrik
Marstaller (Spofford, N.H.) was intentionally walked and Brown
laced a soft liner to left for the victory.
Rick Lizotte (W. Warwick) took the win (2-1) in relief, allowing
two runs on one hit over two innings, striking out six and walking
one.
Jeffrey Bresslin (Westford, Mass.) took the
loss (1-3).
Marstaller led DWC going 3 for 4 with three RBI including a
run-scoring triple in the third, while Lizotte went 3 for 4
knocking in one in the third.
Nick Michaud (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and Richards added two hits
each.
Luis went 3 for 4 for the Raiders including his first round
tripper of the season, knocking in three and scoring twice at
leadoff. Tim O'Meara (Burlington, Mass.) added two
hits including a RBI double.
In the opener, Michaud and Shaun Hanson (Lee,
N.H.) locked up in a pitcher's duel over seven innings as
each scattered four hits on the night, respectively.
Hanson sparkled, racking up 10 strikeouts against one walk,
though he hit four batters. Still, the Eagles couldn't take
advantage until the eighth.
Michaud (3-2) meanwhile was steady striking out two and walking
one and allowed only one extra-base hit, a double to Ryan O'Connor,
who went 2 for 3, in the first inning.
The Eagles had been frustrated all game leaving six men stranded
in scoring position including three at third base before getting a
break in the fateful eighth.
Elliot Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) was hit to open the frame, stole
second and Marstaller (3 for 4 with a triple) beat out an infield
single to put runners at the corners.
After Brown grounded to short, Nick Lalumia (Maywood, N.J.) was
intentionally walked. After Lizotte struck out, Hanson unleashed a
pitch that went high tipping off Luis's glove to the backstop and
Kilgore alertly slid into home for the eventual winner.
Michaud then came in for a quick 1-2-3 eighth to seal the win.
The Raider will return to action on Saturday, weather
permitting, against Lasell College, game time is scheduled for 1:00
PM.
