Norwich Blasts Rivier, 19-6, On Senior Day

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Kacey Abbriano netted a game-high five goals, and Chelsea Martin posted three goals and a game-high two assists as the Norwich University women's lacrosse team defeated Rivier College, 19-6, Sunday afternoon at Howard Field.

Suzanne Whitaker added three goals for the Cadets (6-6, 6-1 GNAC), while Lindsey Mathias chipped in two goals and one assist. Ally Allen and Kathleen Hennessy each potted two goals apiece, while Maura Kee and Danielle Del Dotto each tallied one marker.

Lauren Brett (Otisfield, ME) and Jordyn Reyes (Amesbury, MA) each scored two goals apiece to lead Rivier (3-9, 2-6 GNAC). Natalie Bonvie (Salem,NH) chipped in one goal and one assist, and Bridget Emerson (Goffstown, NH) scored once to round out the Raiders' scoring.

Norwich got on the board first as Del Dotto scored just two minutes into the contest. Rivier tied the game at 1-1 less than three minutes later when Brett potted her first marker of the game.

Hennessy and Abbriano scored within a span of 15 seconds later in the half to help NU take a 3-1 lead, but Emerson tallied a goal off an assist from Bonvie to make it 3-2 with 23:48 to play in the opening stanza.

Three consecutive man-up goals by Martin spurred a 13-2 run by Norwich to end the half that gave the Cadets a 16-4 advantage at the intermission. Whitaker and Abbriano each scored three times during the spurt, which gave Norwich a commanding 12-goal cushion.

Reyes scored the first two goals of the second half to pull Rivier to within 16-6 less than nine minutes into the frame, but markers by Abbriano, Kee and Allen capped the scoring.

Meghan Kennedy (2-1) stopped 15 shots in the Norwich cage to earn the victory between the pipes for the Cadets.

Norwich held a 39-25 edge in shots, and the Cadets owned a 46-40 advantage in ground balls.

The Raiders will finish their season on Tuesday with a 7:00 PM game at Fitchburg State College.
