NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 15, 2010 – The
Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team played their first home game of the
season on Wednesday and came away with a 3-0 victory over Rivier.
The Chargers improve to 2-3 overall, while Rivier drops to 0-5.
Freshman Joe Soojian (Leicester, Mass.) put the home team on top
in the third minute after receiving a great through ball from
junior Derek Veilleux (Winslow, Maine). Soojian was just onsides
when Veilleux threaded a pass by a couple of Rivier defenders
setting up the break away. Senior John Jarvis (Henniker,
N.H.) came out of net to challenge the play, but Soojian
put his first collegiate goal into the back of the net.
The Chargers, who were applying pressure in the offensive zone
all game, took a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute. Veilleux was involved
again as he sent a bending ball towards the net off a corner kick.
The ball started to descend at the back of the net when sophomore
Tyler Stotz (Amesbury, Mass.) headed it passed the keeper.
Freshman Mike Laskowski (Fremont, N.H.) increased the Chargers
lead to 3-0 in the 69th minute with his second goal of the season.
Sophomore Kurt Carvalho (Plymouth, Mass.) took a free kick from
close to midfield after a Rivier foul. Carvalho served the ball
towards the net and saw it take one big bounce away from the keeper
who came out of the net. Laskowski jumped and got his head on it to
deposit the ball into the net.
Colby-Sawyer held a big advantage in shots 24-5 and corner kicks
13-1.
Junior Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) made three saves en route to his
second shutout of the season for the Chargers. Jarvis made three
saves in 45 minutes, while sophomore Matt St. Peter
(Colchester, Vt.) had two saves in the second 45 minutes
for Rivier.
Colby-Sawyer returns to TCCC play on Saturday with a game at
Eastern Nazarene beginning at 3:00 pm. The Raiders will play at
Emmanuel on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
