Nashua, NH - The Rivier College Raiders Field Hockey team
battled hard tonight on their way to a second straight shutout
loss. Playing only their second game of the season, the Raiders
were light years ahead of the effort put forth last week against a
team in Gordon College that was on its fifth outing of the
year.
Although the Raiders were once again held scoreless by a margin
of 8-0, the improvements on teh field were visible by the more than
50 spectators who braved the elements to watch the two teams
play. The shot totals for the Raiders were up from 2 to 12
and the shots on goal went from 1 to 7 over the span of the two
games played.
Gordon College jumped onto the board in less than 5 minutes as
Samantha Neverett recieved a pass from Veronica Pierce that found
its way past Rivier goal keeper Nicole Hauswirth for the early 1-0
lead. Brianne Gilbert followed less than two minutes later to
extend the lead to 2-0.
After that second goal, there was a scoring drought for over 14
minutes of play as Gordon rattled off 5 more shots, but Hauswirth
was able to stop them all. Shortly after the 20 minute mark,
Melinda Fowler was able to add to the Gordon lead, making it a 3-0
game. Leah LaPalombara and Melanie Landis, along with two
more goals by Neverett and one y Fowler, also scored to put the
game well out of reach for the young upstart Raiders.
Hauswirth recorded 15 saves on the night for the Raiders while
Lindsay Rettenmeier, Kristen Tyler* and Hilary Bouchard all got
multiple shot attempts for the blue and white.
Rivier will take the field again on Saturday, September 18th as
they travel to Chicopee, MA to take on Elms College, game time is
slated for 12:00 PM.
