Nashua, NH – Rivier College grabbed its first win of the
season tonight with a 3-2 victory over visiting Newbury College.
Rivier's Chris Nugent (Camberley, United Kingdom)
banged home the game winning goal just 10 minutes into the second
half after picking up the rebound from teammate Alex Lamparelli's (Epping, NH) shot that was saved by Newbury's
goal keeper William McNally (Grafton, MA). Nugent took the rebound
and placed the ball into the back of the net for the 3-2 lead and
what ended up being the game winner.
The game went back and forth with each team responding after the
other scored a goal. Newbury started in the first half when Tim
Chatigny (Pelham, MA) put the Nighthawks up 1-0 off an assist by
Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, MA). Rivier responded 15 minutes
later and tied the game at 1-1 as freshman Shawn Gareau (Hardwick, MA) picked up his first goal of the
season on an unassisted play. Rivier wasted little time as senior
Andrew McCarn (Laconia, NH) was able to pick up
his first goal of the season off a rebound from a shot by teammate
Mike Birecki (Andover, MA). McCarn's goal put the
Raiders up 2-1, a score that would hold up through half time.
Just five minutes into the second half, it was Newbury's turn to
respond to the lead change. Following an offside penalty by the
Raiders, sophomore Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, MA) was able
to beat goalkeeper John Jarvis (Henniker, NH) to
tie the game at 2-2. Just 5 minutes later, Nugent's goal would
break the tie to put the Raiders up 3-2 and the Raiders would be
able to hold off a persistent Nighthawk attack, including 4 shots
on goal, to take home the win.
The win breaks a 6 game losing streak for the Raiders to improve
their record to 1-6, while the Nighthawks fall to 1-4 on the
season. The Raiders will play again on Saturday, September 25th
when they travel to Newton, MA to take on GNAC opponent Lasell
College at 2:30 PM.
