(Hartford, CT) In their first game after the Holiday Break, the Rivier College Men's Basketball team opened up the 2011 Trinity College Invitational with an 80-64 loss to Westfield State.
Sophomore Tom Poitras (Bow, NH) was the leading scorer for Rivier, who falls to 1-7 on the season, with 23 points. Senior Brian Troy (Kenne, NH) knocked down three three-pointers in the game and finished with 9 points. Junior Mike Polley (Nashua, NH) led the attack along the boards as he pulled down a team high 10 rebounds.
The Raiders played better in the second half as they were able to increase their shooting percentage by 18 points (35.7% in the first half to 53.8% in the second).
The Westfield State (8-4 overall) offense was fueled by Lee Vazquez, Matt Devine and Travis Nally. The trio combined for 50 of the team's 80 points. Vazquez was the leader with a game high 26 points while both Devine and Nally recorded 12 points each. Devine also finished with 11 rebounds making him the only player with a double-double in the contest.
Rivier will return to action tomorrow in the consolation game of the 2011 Trinity Invitational against either host Trinity College or Elmira College. Those two teams are squaring off in the night cap of the Invitational.
