Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Rettenmeier's late goal lifts Rivier past Elms, 2-1

Nashua, NH - The Rivier College Field Hockey team remained unbeaten as they edged a tough Elms College squad today, 2-1 in front of a big crowd at Raider Field.

The Raiders (2-0 overall) got on the board early in the first half. Sophomore Kayla O'Reilly (Marshfield, MA) shot one past Elms goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, MA) just 1:29 into the game. O'Reilly's goal was set up beautifully from freshman Presleigh Skelley (Wolfeboro, NH), who was able to guide the ball through the Elms defense and place it on the stick of O'Reilly.

Trailing at the half by one, Elms College came out with a plan to start the second half. Inside the 48 minute mark, Elms freshman Tatiana Frizzell (Brattleboro, VT) found herself in front of the net and was able to deflect Meghan Goodrow's (Sunderland, MA) shot by Rivier freshman net-minder Makenzie Flagg (Shirley, MA). That goal tied the game and ended Flagg's scoreless minutes streak at 117:43; the best start and longest streak in Rivier Field Hockey history.

The hardworking Raiders were able to battle right back. Just over three minutes later Rivier was awarded a corner and capitalized. Junior Ashley Ruocco (East Kingston, NH) took the corner and sent the ball up top to O'Reilly who alertly passed over to an open Lindsay Rettenmeier (Jr., Ashford, CT). Rettenmeier did the rest as she sent a shot through traffic to give the Raiders a 2-1 advantage with 20 minutes left to play.

The last 20 minutes was not easy for Rivier as the Blazers' attack was strong. Flagg was up to the challenge as she stopped every shot the rest of the way, including a great kick save on a one time shot from EC's Goodrow.

In total, Flagg stopped 7 of the 8 shots she saw to earn her second win. Bonavita made 4 saves on 6 shots.

Next up the Raiders will travel to Paxton, MA on Monday (9/12) as they will play Anna Maria College in a 4pm non-conference game. Elms will host Smith on Tuesday (9/13).
