Providence, R.I. – The Rivier University Women's Soccer team fell on the road to Johnson and Wales University, 5-2. JWU senior Erin Mahoney (Merrimack, N.H.) recorded a hat trick in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Outdoor Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening.
Mahoney put the Wildcats up in the 18th minute when she blasted in a crossing pass from freshman Sara Kate Matthews (Northborough, Mass.). Rivier was able to knot the game when senior Lauren Tamposi (Hollis, N.H.) went on a breakaway and slipped a shot past the keeper at the 30:14 mark. JWU closed out the half on a strong note as freshman Emily McClarnon (Wakefield, R.I.) scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to propel the Wildcats to a 3-1 advantage heading into halftime.
After a performance by the JWU Pom Squad at halftime, a flash mob with close to 100 Wildcats students rushed the field for an impromptu performance.
The Wildcats came out of the locker room fired up as back-to-back goals by Mahoney in the 46th and 51st minute put the team ahead 5-1. Tamposi's second goal of the game at the 55:49 mark cut the lead to three, but it wouldn't be enough as JWU cruised to the 5-2 victory.
With the victory Johnson & Wales is now 4-5-2 for the season and 2-1-1 in the GNAC while Rivier falls to 2-6-1 on the season and 1-3 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, October 6th when they host Simmons in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at 12:00 p.m.
