(Nashua, New Hampshire) The Rivier University Softball team was just one strike away from securing a one run win in the opener but Saint Joseph's Mary Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) blasted a 0-2 offering over the left center field fence for a three run homer to steal game one from the Raiders, 4-2. USJ then went on to two-hit Rivier in the second game for the double-header sweep.
Game One: University of Saint Joseph 4, Rivier University 2 (Final)
Sophomore Libby Sammon (Rockland, Mass.) pitched brilliantly over her seven innings of work, however one bad pitch ended up costing her and the Raiders the win. The 6-0 right hander allowed four runs on eight hits and punched out three on the evening. Seniors Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI) and Kirste Clark (Brentwood, NH) had RBI hits for Rivier.
Mary Sciglimpaglia finished game one going 1-for-4 with 3 RBI and a HR. Her sister, Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) earned the win inside the circle as she held Rivier to just two runs on five hits and struck out 13.
Game Two: University of Saint Joseph 9, Rivier University 0 (Final/5 inning)
The Blue Jays plated three runs in the top half of the first as the momentum carried over into game two, despite the drizzly to rainy conditions. Freshman Ashley Tucker (Middletown, Conn.) had a two hit night for USJ and Emily Vique (Lebanon, Conn.) added two RBI in the win.
Sophomore Taylor Miller (Haverhill, Mass.) took the loss as she allowed three runs in just 1/3 of an inning pitched. Sammon and Clark finished the rest of the game inside the circle.
USJ's Danielle Circosta (Feeding Hills, Mass.) had a perfect game broken up by Rivier freshman Nicole Scotti (Concord, NH) in the fifth inning. Sophomore Kathryn Mostone (Pelham, NH) added the other Raider hit.
Rivier will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host Emmanuel College in a GNAC Double-Header beginning at 12pm.
