(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Softball team dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference contests this afternoon at Raider Field as they fell to visiting Suffolk University 7-6 and 10-4. The losses send the Raiders' overall record to 5-11 with a 0-8 mark in conference play. Suffolk improves to 11-5 and 7-1 GNAC.
Game One: Suffolk University 7, Rivier University 6 (Final)
The Raiders put together a late rally in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough as they left the tying run on base in the 7-6 loss to Suffolk in game one of the GNAC twin bill.
Trailing 7-4, Rivier got a leadoff homer from sophomore Shaylyn Freitas (Pelham, N.H.) and a RBI double from classmate Destiny Jordan (Lawrence, Mass.) to make it 7-6 with two outs but the next batter grounded out to end the game.
Junior Taylor Miller (Haverhill, Mass.) spun a complete game allowing seven runs (six earned) on ten hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Miller falls to 2-6 on the season.
Freitas finished the ball game going 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Freshman Tori Dugan (Norwalk, Conn.) went 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot while freshman Jordan Parece (Pelham, N.H.) and junior Lia Bobek (Hollis, N.H.) recorded hits for Rivier.
Game Two: Suffolk University 10, Rivier University 4 (Final)
Junior Libby Sammon (Rockland, Mass.) allowed ten runs on twelve hits as the Raiders were swept by the Suffolk University Rams with a 10-4 final in game two of the day's double-header. Sammon struck out two and allowed two home runs in the loss as she falls to 2-2 on the season.
Junior Jess Shanahan (Merrimack, N.H.) tossed the final two innings in relief and only allowed a pair of hits.
Parece had a 2 RBI double and Dugan added a RBI single in the loss. Bobek finished 2-for-2 out of the nine hole with junior Sam Verney (Goffstown, N.H.) going 1-for-3 with a run scored. Freshman Shannon Sholds (Methuen, Mass.) also record a base knock in the loss.
Rivier will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon when they host Pine Manor College for a non-conference double header. Game one is slated to begin at 12pm.
