Women's Lacrosse Sneak by Cadets in OT

NASHUA, NH: Rivier women's lacrosse won against Norwich University this evening at Joanne Merrill Field in conference play.  

THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/16/23

- Score: River 10, Norwich 9

- Records: Rivier (2-0, 1-0 GNAC), Norwich (1-3, 0-2 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the first quarter Norwich put away four goals. Maddie Etherton had two, one on a free position shot. Michaila Furchak recorded a goal with the assist from Ellie Moriarty and Quinn Mustone netted another. Rivier's Sarah Lachance (Chelmsford, MA) put away an unassisted goal at 9:57 on the clock and another goal (UP) at 2:57 with an assist credited to Bailey Carroll (Nashua, NH).

- Furchak scored again for the Cadets in the second quarter with a pass from Valentine Drown. Norwich's Athena Merck made the game 6-2 with an unassisted goal. Drown contributed with her first goal of the game for the Cadets, increasing the score to 7-2. Caitlin Newell (Litchfield, NH) buried her free position shot, starting the Raiders comeback. Lachance hustled by the Cadets defenders to score another Riv goal.

- In the third quarter Rivier took the lead 9-8. Lachance truly stood out, putting away four unassisted goals, one on a free position shot for Riv. Newell tacked on another Raiders' goal, which was unassisted. Maggie Doyle was the only one to score for Norwich in the third quarter.

- Cadets' Merck tied the score at 9-9 in the fourth quarter, forcing the game into overtime.

- 23 seconds into OT, Lachance fired the ball into the back of the net to win the game for the Raiders.

- Lachance had an impressive game tonight, putting away eight of 10 goals for Rivier.

- Margaret Smith (Portland, ME) started her first game for the Raiders, earning six saves and was able to come out with the win. Maeve Noble-Lowe saved eight shots for the Cadets this evening.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Shots: Rivier 27, Norwich 26

- Ground Balls: Rivier 31, Norwich 30

- Penalties: Rivier received two yellow cards and one green card, Norwich received one yellow card

- Rivier women's lacrosse will face Dean College Saturday, March 18th at 1:00 PM in conference action at Joanne Merrill Field.
