Men's Soccer Opens Season with Draw at Keene St.

KEENE, N.H. — The Rivier men's soccer team battled to a 3-3 draw in their season opener against Keene St. at Dr. Ron Butcher Field.

The Owls started applying the pressure early and got out to a fast start, opening the scoring with a free kick in the 16th minute to give themselves an early 1-0 lead.

The Raiders would find their stride not long after the opening goal and respond with a goal of their own in the 21st minute resulting from a set piece taken by senior Thomas Lanzillo which was flicked on by graduate student Thomas Hennessey, allowing junior Logan Rockwood to find the back off the net off a header.

Hennessey would add a goal to his tally, this time finding the back of the net after winning his duel against two Keene St. defenders and slipping his shot past the Owls' goalkeeper to give Rivier a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Hennessey picked up where he left off in the first half, providing his second goal of the game after backheeling a pass from first-year Luiggi Ferriera and shot past the keeper to give Rivier a 3-1 lead with just over 21 minutes to play.

Keene St. would not go away quietly, as three minutes later, the Owls answered with their second goal of the game to cut the Raider lead in half before finding the equalizer with four minutes to play to end the game level at 3-3.

Sophomore goalkeeper Logan Clough recorded five saves in the contest which served as his Rivier debut.

The Raiders will host their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 3 as they take on non-conference opponent, Plymouth St. at 7:00 p.m. at Merrill Field.
