Late Goals Propel Women's Soccer Over Anna Maria, 2-0

NASHUA, N.H. – A pair of goals scored in the final 7:34 of regulation were enough to push the Rivier women's soccer team past Anna Maria in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Merrill Field on Wednesday night.

The Raiders remained unbeaten against conference opponents due to the win, improving to 4-3-2 (4-0-1 GNAC). The AMCATS fell to 1-5-1 (1-3-1 GNAC) in the loss.

Rivier failed to convert in the opening 45 minutes despite outshooting Anna Maria, 7-2. Junior keeper Bri Nugent made two stops in the opening half to keep the game at a deadlock at halftime.

After numerous scoring chances, the Raiders broke the scoreless deadlock and got on the board with 7:34 left to play. Following a shot by Kaylee Magoon that went off the bar, Emily Harper found Maya Leach who fired a right-footed shot from the box to record her first collegiate goal, giving the home side a 1-0 lead.

Just over three minutes later, Riv added insurance as a corner kick by Nadia Laxa caromed off of Harper to Darcy Wright who headed in the second goal of the contest for the Raiders with under five minutes remaining.

Nugent made one final save in the waning minutes as Rivier held on for its fourth consecutive GNAC victory. The Killingworth, Conn. native made three stops in her third straight shutout.

The Raiders outshot the AMCATS, 19-3, and earned two more corner kicks than their opposition.

Rivier continues its GNAC slate on Saturday, Sept. 28 in an Alumni Reunion Weekend showdown against Emmanuel (Mass.) at 3:00 p.m. at Merrill Field.
