Men's Ice Hockey Defeats UMass Dartmouth, 4-1

NASHUA, N.H. – Behind 37 saves from senior goaltender LJ Newell, the Rivier men's ice hockey team downed UMass Dartmouth in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action by a final score of 4-1 on Thursday night at Conway Arena.

The Raiders improved to 7-15-2 (3-12-2 MASCAC) as the Corsairs fell to 10-13-1 (7-9-1 MASCAC).

Senior Ashton Jones got the scoring going midway through the first period, burying a loose puck in the slot to give the Raiders the lead.

The Raiders doubled their lead 10:02 into the second period as senior Cormac Hayes fired in a shot short side off a deflection to make it 2-0. Less than a minute later, classmate Ryan Nolte finished on an odd-man rush, burying a loose puck off a rebound to give the home team a three-goal advantage. Sophomore Damon Kiyawasew added to the Rivier lead with 6:23 left to play in the second frame, firing in a loose puck off a hustle play from graduate Tyler Duderstadt.

The Corsairs broke the shutout with 1:06 to play, but the late rally proved to be too little, too late as the Raiders held on for the win.

Senior goalkeeper LJ Newell made 37 stops in his seventh triumph of the campaign.

Rivier concludes its 2025 season at Fitchburg St. on Saturday, Feb. 22 with a 5:00 p.m. puck drop at the Wallace Civic Center.
