Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Downs Lasell, 11-7

NEWTON, Mass. Powered by a four-goal performance from graduate student Coby Mercier, the Rivier men's lacrosse team earned an 11-7 victory over Lasell on Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field.

With the win, the Raiders snapped a winless streak against the Lasers dating back to 2010 and improved to 2-0 , while the Lasers fell to 1-1.

Mercier opened the scoring for Rivier on a man-up opportunity, taking a pass from senior Michael Zapatka and firing a shot past the Lasell goaltender to give the Raiders an early 1-0 lead. Zapatka and graduate student Connor Eck followed with back-to-back unassisted goals in a two-minute span, extending the advantage to 3-0. Mercier struck again with 2:13 remaining in the quarter, but Lasell answered just before the buzzer to cut the lead to 4-1 after the opening frame.

Rivier erupted for four consecutive goals in a span of 3:59 to begin the second quarter, highlighted by two goals each from first-year Aiden Conley and junior Sean Callinan. Lasell responded with two goals before halftime, but the Raiders still carried an 8-3 lead into the break.

Mercier kicked off the second half by completing his hat trick, finishing a crisp feed from senior Chris Heitmiller. Lasell responded with a goal five minutes later, but Mercier quickly answered with his fourth goal of the game, restoring Rivier's six-goal cushion. Heitmiller added a late third-quarter tally, his 100th career goal, and the Raiders held strong in the final frame to secure the 11-7 victory.

Mercier paced the Raiders with a team-high four points, while Heitmiller contributed three points. Graduate student Michael Ference added two assists in the win. Defensively, senior Joseph O'Reilly led the team with five ground balls and recorded two caused turnovers, while fellow graduate student Adam Hailey caused a team-high three turnovers. Graduate goalkeeper Sawyer Gagnon made 14 stops in the victory.

Rivier edged Lasell in ground balls, 27-22. The Raiders went 16-for-20 (80%) on clearing attempts.

The Raiders are back in action on Saturday, March 8, as they get set to host Roger Williams in a non-conference matchup at Merrill Field. Faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
