NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier baseball team extended its winning streak to four games on Wednesday afternoon at Harvey Woods Field, downing Elms in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play by a final score of 5-2.
The Raiders improved to 10-14 (5-5 GNAC) as the Blazers fell to 9-17 (4-7 GNAC).
Senior Luis Tejada got the Raiders on the board with a two-run shot to left in the bottom of the second to make it a 2-0 Rivier lead.
Elms tied the contest in the top of the fifth with a two-RBI base hit off the bat of Camron Watkins.
In the bottom of the sixth, first-year Jayce Martinez came to the plate with the bases loaded and reached on a fielder's choice which resulted in an error, allowing two Raiders to cross the plate, giving the hosts their two-run lead back.
In the next inning, junior righty Ty Baker entered to pursue a seven-out save with two runners on and two outs and recorded a fly out on the first pitch thrown. Junior Dylan Aliberti stepped up in the bottom half and crushed an RBI double to right center, adding an insurance run to make it 5-2.
Baker was able to close the door on the Blazer batters over the next two innings to secure the victory.
Sophomore reliever Damon Reyes earned his first collegiate win, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings of one hit ball, striking out two batters. Reyes came in for classmate Chris Volino who tossed 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, three walks, and a hit batsman while fanning two batters faced. Baker also recorded a pair of strikeouts over 2.1 innings of work in his fifth save of the season.
Senior JD Normand and Reis each went 2-for-4 and scoring as Aliberti went 3-for-4 with a run batted in. Juniors Nathan Innerfield and Owen Medlock earned two walks at the dish.
Rivier will head up to Standish, Maine for a Thursday GNAC doubleheader against Saint Joseph's (Me.) with first pitch at Larry Mahaney Diamond slated for 2:00 p.m.
