PITTSTON, Pa. – The Rivier women's ice hockey team fended off King's College, 3-2, Friday evening at the Revolution Ice Centre in game one of its back-to-back against the Monarchs.
With the result, the Raiders improved to 7-4-0, while the Monarchs fell to 0-11-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams opened the contest with heavy pressure in the attacking zone, each logging five shots.
- The Monarchs broke the deadlock 4:56 in the first period on an even strength opportunity.
- Rivier was awarded a power-play opportunity just shy of the seven-minute mark in the opening frame.
- The Raiders logged six shots on the women advantage but were unable to convert.
- Just past the midway point in the period, first-year Chloe Bryda capitalized on a turnover in King's defensive zone created by senior Molly Dukesherer, leveling the contest 1-1 after firing home a shot in the top right corner of the net.
- Both squads traded chances in the final minutes of the first period, but neither was able to find the back of the net, heading into the first intermission knotted up at one.
- Play continued in a similar fashion to the first period with both teams swapping scoring chances.
- The Raiders broke the deadlock with 5:07 in the second stanza, as junior Haylie Grossmann found Bryda for her second of the game, giving Rivier a 2-1 advantage.
- With just 30 second left in the second period, senior defender Olivia Schultz found first-year Lexi Davies snuck one past the glove of the goaltender to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
- The third period began just as the previous two did, with both teams trading chances.
- King's College recorded one final tally with 1:31 remaining, but were unable to complete the comeback, sealing the game, 3-2.
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
- As a team Rivier outshot the Monarchs 48-27 and controlled the face-off circle, winning 31 of the 56 draws.
- Bryda recorded a team-high seven shots, followed by junior Rebecca McKelvey with six.
- First-year goaltender Emily Krauss logged 25 saves in her third win.
