Men’s Volleyball Falls in Three at Nichols

DUDLEY, MASS. – The Rivier men's volleyball team were swept in a closely contest match with non-conference opponents Nichols Wednesday evening at the Nichols Athletic Center.

With the loss, the Raiders fell to 2-4, while the Bison improved to 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Cade Barron and senior Matthew McCloskey opened the contest with early kills to take a 3-1 lead. Nichols tied the contest on the back of a 4-1 before both teams battled through five tied scores. The Bison took control following the 10-10 deadlock, recording 10 kills to close out the first set 25-19.
  • Nichols jumped ahead 7-3 to open the second set, but Rivier steadily closed the gap and moved in front 12-11 behind a pair of kills from junior Tyler Dickinson. The Raiders pushed their advantage to as many as five late in the frame, yet the Bison countered with a 10-5 surge to send the set to extra points. The teams traded ties at 24, 25, and 26 before a Nichols kill followed by am error secured the set and a 2-0 match lead.
  • Nichols jumped out to a 9-1 lead to start the third, putting Rivier in an early hole. The Raiders clawed their way back behind strong serving and four combined kills from first-year Kaden Layne and McCloskey to pull within three at 17-14. The Bison created separation again, but a McCloskey kill and an ace from junior Justin Barish trimmed the deficit to 21-20. They set pushed to extra points with ties at 24, 25, 26, and 27, yet Nichols closed out the match with a kill and an ace to take the frame 29-27 and complete the sweep.
