Men’s Volleyball Downs Regis (Mass.) in Straight Sets

WESTON, Mass. – The Rivier men's volleyball team recorded 48 kills in their sweep over Regis (Mass.)  to pick up its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the campaign.

With the win, the Raiders improved to 8-8 (1-1 GNAC), while the Pride fell to 9-8 (0-1 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Regis (Mass.) opened with a 4-2 lead following a kill by Brandon Valdes and an attacking error. Rivier responded with a 6-2 run, including two kills from junior Tyler Dickinson and a kill by first-year Kenji Clark, to take a 7-5 lead. The set remained close with six ties, the last occurring at 9-9 before a kill off the hands of sophomore Cody Fitzpatrick and a attack error by the Pride gave the Raiders an 11-9 advantage. Following a Regis (Mass.) timeout with Rivier leading 21-17, the Pride narrowed the gap to 24-20. Clark ended the set 25-20 with a kill assisted by junior Joseph Cruz.
  • The Raiders took an immediate 4-0 lead behind two kills from sophomore Cade Barron and a pair of errors by the Pride. Regis (Mass.) utilized two timeouts as the Raiders extended their lead, eventually reaching 20-13 following a block by Dickinson and Fitzpatrick. The Pride pulled within five points at 23-18. Senior Matthew McCloskey secured the 25-18 set victory for the Raiders with a kill assisted by Justin Barish.
  • The final set featured 14 ties and eight lead changes. Rivier started with a 5-1 lead, but Regis (Mass.) rallied to take a lead at 10-8 following a service ace by Valdes. The teams traded points through the middle of the set, remaining tied at 15-15 and 19-19. The Pride reached set point at 25-24 following an, but a setting error by Regis (Mass.) tied the score at 25-25. After a Pride kill made it 26-25, a service error by Regis (Mass.) leveled the score once again. Dickinson recorded back-to-back kills to end the set 28-26 and clinch the match.

  • As a team, the Raiders recorded 48 kills and a .321 hitting percentage compared to the Prides 34 kills and .204 hitting percentage.
  • Dickinson led the team with 15 kills and a hit at a .560 clip.
  • Clark followed close behind with 13 kills and a .304 hitting percentage.
  • McCloskey rounded out the offense with eight kills and a .667 hitting percentage.
  • Barish and Barron combined for 36 assists.
  • Cruz led the team defensively, tallying 12 digs.
