NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier women's lacrosse team came up short, 13-11, Saturday afternoon to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Saint Joseph (Conn.) at Joanne Merrill Field.
With the loss, the Raiders dropped to 1-4 (1-2 GNAC), while the Blue Jays improved to 2-3 (1-0 GNAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USJ jumped out to a 2-0 lead before first-year Olivia Wheeler converted a free position shot at the 7:18. The Blue Jays recorded two free position goals at 5:08 and 1:45 to take a three-goal lead after the first quarter.
- Wheeler opened the second quarter scoring her second goal of the game on a feed from first-year Averie Proulx. USJ regained a three-goal advantage before first-year Kaycie Hudon scored a women-up goal to get back within two. Each squad scored two more goals each down the stretch, with Hudon finding the back of the net at 4:18 and first-year Chloe Waldron recording a score at 2:17 to bring Rivier within two heading into halftime.
- The Blue Jays added two quick goals to start the third quarter with Hudon completing her hattrick in between at 12:06. Waldron found twine with 5:07 remaining in the third frame to make it 9-7. USJ scored two consecutive goal to close out the third quarter and take its largest lead of the contest, 11-7.
- The Raiders flipped the script in the fourth quarter scoring back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter. Sophomore Ashlynn Ledoux found junior Sofia Cebrero who rifled home a back handed shot, making it 11-8. Wheeler secured her hattrick just 35 second later to cut the deficit to two once again. The Blue Jays took back their three-score lead, but Hudon and Wheeler found the back of the net, making it a one goal game. With 6:02 remaining in the game, USJ sealed the contest with its 13th tally.
