Baseball Splits Twin Bill with Saint Joseph’s (Me.)

STANDISH, Maine – The Rivier baseball team split its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Saint Joseph's (Me.) Wednesday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond.

With the results, the Raiders moved to 7-9 (2-2 GNAC) and the Monks sit at 17-7 (4-4 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Anthony Morro opened the contest striking out three batters in two scoreless innings of work.
  • Saint Joseph's opened the scoring in the top of the third inning with a leadoff home run to left field.
  • The Monks doubled their lead in the top of the fourth with one out on another home run, this time to left centerfield.
  • Saint Joseph's rallied for three more runs in the top of the sixth inning before Rivier got on the board in the bottom half of the frame. Senior Dylan Aliberti opened the inning with a leadoff single to right-center, followed by a single through the left side by junior Liam Stott to put runners on first and second. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position before senior Matt Labrecque brought home Aliberti with an RBI ground out to third base. Junior Alex Gallicano capped the scoring in game one with an RBI single to left field, plating Stott.
  • The Raiders flirted with a comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh, putting two runners on base; however, neither was able to score, ending game one with a 5–2 final.

  • Morro finished with six strikeouts, retiring 15 of the 23 batters he faced in five innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rivier got on the board early as Stott brought home junior Colton Colleran with on an RBI double down the right field line to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Saint Joseph's responded in the top of the second, tying the game on a RBI single to left field.
  • The Raiders took back their lead in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Aliberti singled through the left side to bring home Colleran and give Rivier a 2–1 advantage. Sophomore David Miller extended the lead to two runs with an RBI groundout to first base, scoring junior Nathan Innerfield.
  • After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Raiders erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Jayce Martinez drove in Stott with an RBI single through the right side before Innerfield singled up the middle to score first-year Austin Suchecki and Martinez, pushing the lead to six. Aliberti followed with a single to right-center, and Stott later scored Reis after reaching on an error to give Rivier a 9–1 lead.
  • The Monks chipped away at the deficit in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs on a single up the middle to make it 9–3.
  • Saint Joseph's added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning, scoring once on an error and again on a hit batsman with the bases loaded, cutting the deficit to four.
  • Senior Ty Baker entered the game in top of the ninth and shut the door, going one, two, three to secure the 9-5 victory.

  • Reis paced the offense with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, followed by Aliberti with three hits and two runs batted in.
  • Junior Chris Volino pitched seven innings, striking out two, and walking one.
