Nashua, NH - The Raiders of Rivier College welcomed the Simmons
College Sharks to campus today and gave Simmons their first NAC
conference victory 5-1. Both teams started the day winless in
conference play and with 3 remaining conference games for each
team, both needed today's victory to climb out of the basement and
give themselves a chance at a playoff berth.
Simmons got on the board early as Caitlyn Sweeney scored just 4
minutes into the contest to give the Sharks the early 1-0
lead. Marianna Brown scored again for the Sharks around the
19 minute mark to extend the lead to 2-0 and take that score into
half time.
Raider Meghan MacDonald (Dedham, MA) added Rivier's lone goal 8
minutes into the second half to cut the lead in half, but Simmons
kept the pressure on and found the back of the goal box 3 more
times before the game would end. Lee Sutherland, Brown and Emily
Sypher would score the final 3 goals for the Sharks, Sutherland
would assist on the final 2 goals.
Simmons out shot Rivier 26-3 for shots on goal with goal keeper
Jenna Beadle (Rumney, NH) able to stop 21 of the Sharks shots.
Most of the game was played in Rivier's zone, with the
defense unable to get the ball up field to start an
attack.
Next up, Rivier will host non-conference opponent Anna Maria
College on October 22 at 7:00 PM while Simmons will host Regis
College on October 20 at 7:00 PM.
