Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Raiders taken down by Panthers; Mellen scores 1000th point of career

Riv (1-1) came out sluggish on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. PSU jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first 4 minutes of the game only to have the Raiders fight back and knot the score at 12. The game went back and forth over the next 6 minutes with neither team taking more than a four point lead. Riv then committed 14 turnovers over the final 10 minutes of the 1st half to allow the Panthers to stretch the lead to 13 points.

The Raiders stormed out of the gates and went on a 6-0 run to start the final stanza. This was as close as Riv would get as PSU shot lights out from behind the arc.

Senior Jess Mellen (Rockland, MA) had her second double-double in as many games. Mellen scored her 1000th point off an offensive rebound and put-back with less than two minutes to go in the game. Jess becomes the first 4-year Raider to reach the 1000 point plateau since 1998. She finished with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman Liz Dean (Saugus, MA) had a career night as she tallied 11 points, 5 rebounds and just 1 turnover. Freshman Lauren Brett (Otisfield, ME) and sophomore Amandra Purcell (Hudson, NH) also played well for the Blue and Gray as they each finished with 9 points. Purcell added 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in the losing effort.

The Raiders are back on the hardwood tomorrow afternoon as they take on host Maine Maritime Academy. Game time is slated for 12pm.
