NORTON, MA- Wheaton College field hockey sophomore Emily Asack
(Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) notched a hat trick and the Lyons turned
in a season high for goals during Wednesday afternoon's 8-0 victory
over visiting Rivier College in a rescheduled match on Clark Field
during the teams' first meeting.
Wheaton moved above the .500 mark at 4-3, while the Raiders, out of
the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), fell to 1-3.
Nine other Lyons had a hand in the scoring, with junior Jessica
Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) contributing to a pair of goals
with a tally and an assist. Senior Alex Block (Saratoga,
CA/Saratoga), junior Julia Atwood (Concord, MA/Brooks School),
sophomore Sarah Mott (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) and freshman
Kirsten Russell (Cumberland, ME/Greely) also found the back of the
cage. For Mott and Russell, the markers were the first of their
respective college careers.
Senior Cassie Abel (Windham, NH/Salem), junior Margaux Bolte
(Belmont, MA/Belmont) and freshmen Azza Reineman (Manchester,
MA/Pomfret School) and Alex Smith (Suffield, CT/Suffield) provided
the Lyons with one assist each, while senior goalie Andrea Bagley
(Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) had one save in recording her second shutout
of the fall. Rivier senior goalie Jenna Beadle
(Rumney, NH/Plymouth Regional) totaled 15 stops.
In a game that saw Wheaton hold advantages of 31-2 in shots and
17-2 in penalty corners, Atwood picked up the game winner just 2:37
into play. The hosts scored their next two goals 22 seconds
apart before adding a fourth with 2:39 to go in the opening
half.
Three of Wheaton's four second-half tallies were off of corners,
and all the scoring took place during a 6:07 span, including
Russell's goal just 2:42 into the second frame. Block
delivered an unassisted tally 59 ticks after Russell scored, while
Asack's pair of goals off of corners came 1:36 apart.
Rivier will play next against NAC conference opponent Castleton
State College in Castleton, VT. The game is slated to start
at 6:00 PM.
