Rivier Falls to 1-3 with an 8-0 Shutout Loss

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College field hockey sophomore Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) notched a hat trick and the Lyons turned in a season high for goals during Wednesday afternoon's 8-0 victory over visiting Rivier College in a rescheduled match on Clark Field during the teams' first meeting.

Wheaton moved above the .500 mark at 4-3, while the Raiders, out of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), fell to 1-3.

Nine other Lyons had a hand in the scoring, with junior Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) contributing to a pair of goals with a tally and an assist.  Senior Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga), junior Julia Atwood (Concord, MA/Brooks School), sophomore Sarah Mott (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) and freshman Kirsten Russell (Cumberland, ME/Greely) also found the back of the cage. For Mott and Russell, the markers were the first of their respective college careers.

Senior Cassie Abel (Windham, NH/Salem), junior Margaux Bolte (Belmont, MA/Belmont) and freshmen Azza Reineman (Manchester, MA/Pomfret School) and Alex Smith (Suffield, CT/Suffield) provided the Lyons with one assist each, while senior goalie Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) had one save in recording her second shutout of the fall.  Rivier senior goalie Jenna Beadle (Rumney, NH/Plymouth Regional) totaled 15 stops.

In a game that saw Wheaton hold advantages of 31-2 in shots and 17-2 in penalty corners, Atwood picked up the game winner just 2:37 into play.  The hosts scored their next two goals 22 seconds apart before adding a fourth with 2:39 to go in the opening half.

Three of Wheaton's four second-half tallies were off of corners, and all the scoring took place during a 6:07 span, including Russell's goal just 2:42 into the second frame.  Block delivered an unassisted tally 59 ticks after Russell scored, while Asack's pair of goals off of corners came 1:36 apart.

Rivier will play next against NAC conference opponent Castleton State College in Castleton, VT.  The game is slated to start at 6:00 PM.
