Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rivier Loses Tough Battle to WPI, 4-1

The Rivier College Men's Soccer team battled a talented WPI squad tonight at Raider Field. The teams played cautious soccer throughout the first half. Each team's defense thwarting the others attack.

Early in the second half WPI struck on a goal By Matthew Gonsalves. Gonsalves took control of a bounding ball just near the edge of the center circle and beat the Rivier defense for the 1-0 lead. After a thirty plus minute delay for a injury the Raiders started back slowly. They allowed two goals in a 1:40 second span. The mountain was becoming more difficult to overcome. The lone bright spot was a Mike Birecki (Andover, MA) pass from out of the back that found Fellow freshman Eric "Ricky" Moreno (Lynn, MA) who laid the ball off to Senior Chris Nugent (Camberly Surrey, England). Nugent's goal came in the 72nd minute of play.  The Raiders continued to press the Engineers late in the match. WPI Keeper Kirk Dragbaek was up to the task of handling the Rivier attack.

Raider's junior keeper John Jarvis (Henniker, NH) started and played well for the Raiders. Jarvis was replaced with 13 minutes to go in the contest by freshman Matt St. Peter (Colchester, VT).

On Saturday the Raiders travel to Emerson College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match up. Emerson plays its home game at the field at Rotch Playground. The Rivier College Men's Soccer team hopes you will join them on Tuesday October 6th when they play host to the visiting Daniel Webster College Eagles.
