Key Largo, FL - Riv (8-3) is off to the best start in program
history as they upset previously undefeated Drew University. The
Raiders faltered on the offensive end to start the game and found
themselves in the hole 11-2. The Blue and Gray re-grouped to tie
the game at 18. The game was knotted at 22 before a 16-4 run by Riv
gave them a 12-point lead at the break. This late spurt was helped
by forcing the Rangers into 13 turnovers. Drew cut the lead to 1
point with 5:43 remaining in the game but Riv tightened up their
defense and drained some clutch free throws to pull out the win.
The Raiders had a season-high four players score in double
figures. Senior Jess Mellen (Rockland, MA) led the
way with a game-high 18 points to go with 9 rebounds and 6 steals.
Junior Steph Adams (Nashua, NH) and freshman
Mackenzie Brooks (Colebrook, NH) were dominant in
the paint as they combined for 20 points and 17 rebounds. More
importantly, the duo limited Drew's 6'1 center to just 2 points.
Senior Monica White (Augusta, ME) was again superb
as she chipped in with 11 points. She added 8 rebounds and again
had just 1 turnover in 31 minutes of action. Sophomore
Amandra Purcell (Hudson, NH) rounds out the double
figure scorers for Riv as she dropped in 13 points.
Monica White was named the Key Largo Classic
Tournament MVP. Jess Mellen was named to the
All-Tournament Team.
Riv returns to wintery New Hampshire as they open conference
play on Saturday. The Raiders are back in the Muldoon Center
to take on Pine Manor College. Game time is 1pm.
