Nashua, NH - The St. Joseph's College Monks put the pedal to the
metal all day on their way to a 6-1 GNAC victory over the Raiders
of Rivier College. The win improves the Monks to 5-4-1
overall and 2-1-1 in GNAC Play while the Raiders fall to 1-9 and
0-4 in the GNAC.
The first goal came just 7:23 into the game, when a Rivier foul
in the goal box gave St. Joseph's striker Paul Robins
(Cornwall, ENG) a penalty kick that he knocked home to
the lower left corner. Rivier's goal tender John Jarvis (Henniker, NH) played strng in goal over the next
20 minutes, making 4 saves before Jesse West (Sheldon, VT) was able
to break in on a good lead pass from teammate Jack LaFreniere
(Alton, NH) for the 2-0 lead and what would be the eventual game
winner. West would add another goal before the end of the
half fro a pass by Ross Suleski (Amesbury, MA) to make the
score 3-0 at halftime.
Just like the first half, St. Joseph's took just over 7 minutes
to score their next goal. This time Gerald Cushing (Hampden,
ME) took the pass from LaFreniere to extend the lead to 4-0.
Shortly after, Rivier's Shawn Gareau (Hardwick, MA) was fouled
during a shot attempt which gave the Raiders a free kick
opportunity. Raiders striker Chris Nugent
(Camberley, ENG) took the kick for the home team and planted a
beautiful ball into the upper right corner of the goal to put
Rivier on the board.
With 20 minutes left on the clock, St. Joseph's continued to
press on the offensive side and two more unassisted goals came
their way, the first by Joe Murphy (Poland, ME) who was the
recipient of a deflected pass attempt by the Raiders
and the second by Brandon Noltkamper (Bath, ME) who scored on
a free kick after a Rivier foul. Noltkamper's kick was
from about the same distance as Nugents before him, and he also
placed a great ball into the upper right corner for the goal.
With a 6-1 lead in hand with less than two minutes to play, the
Monks still pressed forward and got another shot attempt before the
game ended, but Jarvis was there for the stop.
Jarvis had a busy day, recording 17 saves and allowing 6 goals
in teh loss for the Raiders while his counterparts, Nick Campasano
(Goffstown, NH) and Kenny Grade (Hampton, NH) combined for 2
saves and 1 goal allowed. Campasano claimed the win for the
Monks.
