Standish, ME – Senior Chris Hunt (Lisbon,
NH), pitching on short notice, picked up the loss in the
first of two games played on the campus of St. Joseph's College of
Maine. St. Joseph's jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back.
Hunt settled in after giving up 3 hits in the bottom of the first.
Hunt scattered 4 more hits over the next 5 innings. Rivier's lone
hit came in the top of the third inning. Freshman Tim
O'Meara (Burlington, MA) reached on an infield error.
Freshman Ford Coates (Raymond, NH) promptly
singled. Only two other Raiders reached base. Senior Ryan
O'Connor (Medford, MA) also reached on an infield error in
the fourth and Sophomore Jeff Breslin (Westford,
MA) walked in the 5th. The Raiders dropped Game #1 10
– 0.
The Raiders jumped out to a fast start in game #2. Sophomore
Gil Luis (Miami, FL) singled sharply to center
then stole second. Ryan O'Connor followed with a walk. Both players
advanced on a wild pitch, setting the table for Junior Pat
Brooks (Milford, NH). Brooks battled to a 2-2 count then
cracked a sacrifice fly to drive home the first run of the game.
But the story of the game was the Freshman Coates. Coates was
masterful over five innings. After a first inning single &
walk, Coates allowed only two base runners between the second and
fifth innings. Coach Ciarlo went to the well once too often,
however, allowing Coates to continue after giving up a leadoff
single in the bottom of the sixth. The Raiders dropped a close
3–1 decision.
