Newton, MA - Behind a nine goal
performance by Mount Ida College women's lacrosse junior Jen
Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton), the Mustangs routed visiting Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Rivier College 21-7
Saturday afternoon on a windy and cold day in Newton,
Massachusetts. The Mustangs improve to 6-4 overall, 2-3 in
league play while the Raiders fall to 2-5, 1-3 in the GNAC.
Mount Ida, who never trailed through the entire contest, scored the
first three goals of the game on scores from Thompson, freshman
Jemima Lauriston (Taunton, MA/Taunton), and junior Danielle Chuba
(Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) for the outright 3-0
advantage in the opening two minutes of the game.
The Raiders answered scoring two out of the next three goals from
freshmen Lauren Brett (Otisfield,
ME/Oxford Hills Comp.) and Jordyn Reyes (Amesbury,
MA/Ipswich). Thompson would add another for the
Mustangs leading 4-2 with 23 minutes remaining in the half.Two
consecutive goals by Chuba extended the Mustang lead to 6-2 with
15:44 left in the first half. Rivier answered immediately
following on two scores of their own from Brett and sophomore
Bridget Emerson (Goffstown, NH/Goffstown) cutting
the hosts lead to 6-4.
Mount Ida scored 5 consecetive goals to widen the margin that
included 2 goals from Chuba and one goal apiece from Thompson and
junior's Alexandra Sarno (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport Senior)
and Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) good for the 11-4 advantage with
under five minutes to go in the first half.Rivier notched the final
two goals of the half cutting the Mustang lead to 11-6 on two
consecutive scores from junior Natalie Bonvie (Salem,
NH/Salem) to head into the break.
The Mustangs scored 7 straight goals to seal the game as Thomson
added 5 more to her total, another from Chuba, and freshman
Stephanie Hill (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) for the outright 18-6
lead.Reyes added another goal in the 17th minute but the
Mustangs would rally with the final three goals of the contest on
all single scores from Feeter, Thompson, and Sarno for the 21-7
GNAC victory.
Mount Ida goalie Devyn Frank (Mystic, CT/Fitch) made seven saves
against Raiders while Rivier's sophomore goaltender
Lauren Hall (Pelham, NH/Pelham) blocked eight
Mustang shots.
The Raiders will host Pine Manor on Monday April 12, 2010 at 7:00
PM. Mount Ida will host GNAC rival and neighboring school
Lasell College Monday afternoon starting at 4:00 p.m.
