FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 22, 2010) – Senior Megan
Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) led all scorers with a
game-high six points as Fitchburg State downed Rivier College, 9-0
in non-conference action this afternoon.
Right from the start, Fitchburg State controlled the ball,
registering a 20-2 shot advantage in the first half. The Falcons
rifled off three consecutive goals in the opening five minutes to
jump out to a commanding lead. Sophomore Jamie Kelley (Pepperell,
Mass./North Middlesex) started the scoring for Fitchburg State with
her second goal of the season just 0:13 into the contest, while
junior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) and senior
Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) notched back-to-back
markers over a 1:14 span for the 3-0 advantage.
Jacobs continued the Fitchburg State offensive surge midway
through the first half, tallying two straight goals for a 5-0 lead
at the break. At the 12:47 mark, Jacobs hit home for her second
goal of the season off a Jamie Kelley assist, before tallying her
third goal of the year at 17:39 off a Bergeron helper.
In the second half, the Fitchburg State offense picked up from
where it left off as Bergeron drove home her fourth goal of the
season just 2:51 into the period. Jacobs followed shortly after
completing her hat-trick on the day at the 41:26 mark, while Roma
and freshman Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) capped the
scoring over the next seven minutes.
Jacobs led all scorers with three goals in the contest, while
Bergeron tallied five points with two goals and one assist. Roma
was also strong for the Falcons with two markers in the game, while
Kelley added one score and two helpers.
Fitchburg State's offense peppered the Rivier defense all
contest, posting a 31-2 advantage in shots and 7-2 edge in corner.
Sophomore Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) collected her
second shutout of the season with a two save, complete game effort,
while Rivier goalkeeper Nicole
Hauswirth (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) finished the
contest with 19 saves despite the loss.
Fitchburg State (3-2, 1-1 LEC) will be in action again on
Saturday as it travels to Salem State University at 12 p.m. Rivier
(1-3, 0-0 GNAC) will host Castleton State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
