Raiders Upset Pre-Season Favorite Emerson College

Nashua NH - Rivier College (1-0 GNAC; 7-8 overall) picked up their first GNAC win of the year with a 3-1 win over pre-season favorite Emerson College (5-1 GNAC; 13-3 overall). The Raiders handed the 2009 GNAC Champions their first GNAC loss of the season and scored their first win over the Lions in the last 3 meeting. Rivier jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match but couldn't finish the visitors after stumbling out of the gates in set 3. In set 4 the Blue and White were losing much of the match including a 4 point deficit at 22-19 before staging a gutsy comeback to win the 4th stanza 26-24 and the match 3-1.

Sophomore Kenna Finlayson (Derry, NH) paced Rivier with a double double which included 21 kills and 17 digs while junior Lauren Saccoccio (Warwick, RI) had a double double of her own with 41 assists and 21 digs. Freshman Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI) put down 10 kills and put back a team high 5 blocks and junior libero Emileigh Cenedella (Townsend, MA) scooped up a team high 23 digs and while passing well all match. Seniors Nicole Rodriguez (Newton, MA) and Danielle Jacques (Derry, NH) were steady with a combined 15 kills and 4 blocks while sophomore Meghan Farrell (Marlborough, MA) did all the little things for RIV. The back row tandem of junior Caitlin Callahan (Dedham, MA) and sophomore Christi Pratte (Manchester, NH) combined for solid passing and good defense including a combined 21 digs. Callahan also served well with a team high 3 service aces.

Rivier will travel to Norwich University on Saturday October 2 for two more GNAC matches. Rivier will take on Albertus Magnus College at 2:00pm followed by host Norwich at 4:00pm.
