Marietta, OH – The Rivier College Raiders fell 3-0 to
Adrian College (Adrian, Michigan) in the championship game of the
Marietta College Classic soccer tournament on Sunday, September
5th.
Adrian's Sam Barker scored the game winning goal just 2:13 into
the second half with an unassisted shot into the middle of the net
to put Adrian up 1-0. Although Adrian would add two more goals, the
first one was all they needed as they held the Raiders to just 3
total shots and only 2 shots on goal for the game.
The first half of play was tight, all be it dominated on the
offensive end by Adrian. Adrian outshot the Raiders 19-2 in the
opening frame and forced Raiders keeper Christine Surber
(Langdon, NH) to make 9 saves to keep the score knotted at
0-0 going into halftime. Adrian made their adjustments and came out
quickly in the second half with Barkers goal off a thru-ball into
the box that she didn't miss. Less than 1 minute later Adrian
struck again, this time scoring on a free ball by Patti Vaassen
that found the head of Sabrina Fortney for the goal. Vaassen would
also set up the final goal of the game 5 minutes later by dropping
a pass into the box for Haley Smith to blast home and put Adrian up
3-0.
Surber finished the game with 11 saves for the Raiders, while
her counterpart, Chayna Wallace, only got challenged to make 2
saves on the day.
Surber, Christina Parent (Loudon, NH) and
Kaitlyn Souza (Wilmington, MA) were all named to
the Marietta Classic All-Tournament Team. Parent scored the Raiders
lone goal against Marietta to help the Raiders advance to the
championship game while Souza got off two shots on goal during the
tournament.
